In advance of the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic, which will welcome leading American university basketball teams to Northern Ireland to go head-to-head for the first time in Europe on 1st and 2nd December 2017, the Sport Changes Life Foundation has announced a series of exciting basketball camps for young people across the island of Ireland starting Tuesday 31st October.

Designed to encourage young people to join the sport locally and the development of skills for players of all levels, these unique camps, hosted by Sport Changes Life’s Victory Scholars, will offer hands-on coaching sessions in local communities dotted from Derry to Cork, Galway to Kildare, and everywhere in between.

Discussing the impact of this unique opportunity for young people Gareth Maguire, CEO, the Sport Changes Life Foundation, said, “The opportunity to train with Sport Change’s Life’s Victory Scholars will not only help young players to hone their skills, but will also open their minds to the vast opportunities available for young people through sport.  Consisting of American postgraduate students who have excelled in their academics and sport during their undergraduate studies, the Victory Scholars have been selected to study at local universities whilst playing basketball for and coaching local teams.”

Speaking on behalf of the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic, Executive Director Marc Mulholland said, “Not only will our upcoming roadshow of basketball camps help young people to stay busy in their time off over Halloween, but they will also act as an inspirational session to encourage them to pursue their sporting dreams.  The opportunity to be coached by Sport Changes Life’s Victory Scholars will be incredibly inspirational for young athletes and we look forward to helping young players built their confidence and teamwork both on and off the court.”

The Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic Halloween basketball camps have been organised to promote interest in the sport of basketball across the Island of Ireland in the run up to the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic, 1st and 2nd December 2017. Northern Ireland-based Sport Changes Life Foundation has paired up with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Metro Athletic Conference (MAAC) to host teams from well-known American sporting universities across the USA including Manhattan College, from the Belfast Classic Partner the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), as well as College of the Holy Cross, La Salle University and Towson University.  The two day tournament will attract thousands of basketball enthusiasts from across Ireland, Britain and further afield as they gather to learn more about the quickly-growing sport and support their favourite American university teams.

The Classic will celebrate a partnership with Tourism Northern Ireland and Tourism Ireland to facilitate this large-scale two-day sporting event in Northern Ireland’s capital, while official airline partner Aer Lingus will execute the massive project of transporting the American university teams and their supporters.  On arrival these student athletes will be welcomed by Belfast Lord Mayor Councillor Nuala McAllister at a Civic welcome dinner, as the City of Belfast hosts the first of its kind competitive collegiate basketball tournament outside of America.
